Ninja Weapons - How to Throw a Throwing Star

The throwing star, or shuriken, is a centuries old Japanese weapon that was often used by ninja warriors as an additional weapon to their swords or Ninjato. If used correctly the throwing star can be part of a good martial arts training program.

If you have ever tried throwing a dart at a dartboard you know that it takes some practice to get really good. The same caution should be used as when throwing darts. Don't practice in an area where someone could walk in front of your target unexpectedly and clear the area around and behind the practice target of anything that might break if you hit it. Now you need a target. You can buy a really nice looking target if you want, they are worth it, or you can just use an old sheet of plywood with a target drawn on it.

Next, make sure you choose the best throwing stars for practice. Throwing stars come in many designs with a variety of the number of spikes. If you get ones with more spikes the chances are better they will stick more often. Don't be overly concerned about how sharp the spikes are. In fact, those stars that have a thinner, much duller, edge stick better. The thicker heavier ones can be much more difficult to throw with accuracy.

Start out by standing about 15 to 20 feet from the target. You can move further away from it as your skill improves. Before you throw your first throwing star check your practice area again. Be positive that there is no chance someone could walk into the area unexpectedly and that if you miss the target you will not break anything.

As when throwing anything it is important that your body is balanced and comfortable. You want to stand so that your feet are about shoulder length apart. If you are throwing with your right hand, slide your left foot forward about one foot or so. Of course if you use your left hand to throw, move your right foot forward about a foot. When you throw the star you will be shifting weight to the forward foot.

Throwing the ninja star is relatively simple. Make sure you are holding it firmly between your thumb and forefinger. Bend your wrist forward, just slightly. Bring your arm and wrist toward you until the star is right next to your ear and quickly move your arm and hand towards the bullseye. When your arm is parallel to the ground snap your wrist forward and release the star. The entire time you must keep your eye on the bullseye. When you have finished your throw your arm should be fully extended towards the target. Hold that position until the throwing star strikes the bullseye. Before moving again look at your arm and make sure it is fully extended. If not you can correct your mistake on the next throw.

Don't try to throw your ninja star as fast as you can. Make sure you snap your wrist on release to give the throwing star a lot of spin. Spinning the throwing star is much more critical that throwing it hard. A good spinning throwing star will fly straight and stick in the target.

Don't get discouraged. Just like any other skill it will take a lot of practice. Hey, Ninja warriors were not made overnight!

When Walking

The first, and most important, question you have to ask is “How am I going to use this?” Is it for use as a “Nanny Cam” to make sure your children are being taken care of properly? Are you trying to stop employee theft? Are you experiencing repeated vandalism? A hidden camera should only be used to document suspected unlawful or dangerous activity when there is no other way to catch the culprit.

A big problem with hidden cameras is that too often they are used for less than ethical reasons. Just recently a news story came across my desk about a landlord of an apartment building that had wired four apartments with hidden cameras. He placed them in the bathrooms and bedrooms of the tenants. Thankfully the cameras were accidentally discovered and the landlord was arrested and is in jail. I am sure that is not an isolated instance.

One way to make sure you are not a victim of a hidden camera or microphone is to purchase and use a signal detector. They are more commonly known as “Bug Detectors”. We have all seen these being used on TV and in the movies. You simply turn the handheld unit on and walk through the room or “sweep” the room. The signal detector picks up the signal transmitted by the hidden camera or microphone and helps you locate its exact position. When searching for a hidden camera or microphone, look everywhere. Bugs come in many shapes and sizes and can be smaller than a penny. If you do find a hidden camera or microphone, don’t touch it. Call the police immediately and let them handle it.

If you do want a hidden camera for a good reason, there are many types to choose from. Most hidden cameras are built into everyday items you find around a home such as clocks, radios, thermostats, smoke detectors, lamps, etc. You name it and it could contain a hidden camera. When deciding what kind of hidden camera you want, make sure it will fit into the décor of the room. As an example, I don’t think I would put a nice bright neon lit clock in my contemporary living room. But, it would probably fit in nicely in my game room.

In addition to taking the décor into consideration you have to decide what type of hidden camera you want. There are basically 3 types:
1/ Wireless
2/ Wired
3/ Self contained

With the wireless hidden camera you will have the item that contains the camera and a transmitter. This transmitter sends the video signal wirelessly to a receiver. The receiver is then attached to a recording device or a monitor or TV for viewing.

The wired hidden camera will have an A/V cord coming out of the unit that will get plugged in directly to a recording device or TV or monitor.

The self contained hidden camera will have the camera and a recording device, usually an SD memory card, hidden inside of it. In order to view what has been recorded you simply take the memory card out of the unit and place it into your computer for viewing. This type is usually the easiest to set up.

There are many options available when purchasing a hidden camera: black & white or color, low light capability, motion sensing, date & time stamp, etc. You will be able to find the camera that fits your needs and your budget.

The bottom line is that no matter what style or type of hidden camera you purchase, make sure you are purchasing it for a legitimate, ethical reason and use it properly.

Jury Duty Scam

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly i nsidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

PUT YOUR CAR KEYS BESIDE YOUR BED AT NIGHT Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr.'s Office, the check out girl at the market, everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around... after a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see w ho is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that! And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there.

This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or prevent a sexual assault. My Mom has suggested to my Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn't hear him. He can activate the car alarm and then she'll know there's a problem. P.S. I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is fantastic. It would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone.

Stun Guns, Tasers, Pepper Spray… What Is All The Hype?

Lethal vs. non-lethal. That is the main argument for using a stun gun, Taser, or pepper spray instead of a handgun.

We, as a people, abhor violence. However, we see it all around us every single day. It is in the newspapers, on TV, on the internet, in magazines, on blogs, and on and on and on. We cannot get away from the fact that violence is an everyday occurrence in our society. We have been a victim of violence ourselves, or we know someone who has.

After reading a story of a rape, assault or murder we have all asked ourselves what we would have done if we were in that same situation. Usually our immediate response probably would be something like “Boy, I would have killed that guy!” But, when it comes right down to taking a life there is a huge step between getting away from the assailant and actually killing them. Most people would just want to get out of the immediate situation.

This is where stun guns, Tasers, and pepper spray enter the picture. They are considered non-lethal self-defense weapons. Their main function is to stop an attacker so that you can get away from the situation. They should not be used to incapacitate the assailant so that you can then start attacking the attacker!

A person is not considered paranoid or frightened if they are carrying a stun gun, Taser or pepper spray. They are considered prepared. In my years in law enforcement I discovered that those people that gave a little thought to their personal protection, and purchased one of these non-lethal weapons, very rarely, if ever, became a victim.

Each one of the non-lethal weapons mentioned does one job . . . it gives you a good chance of getting away from an attacker. Each weapon is designed to temporarily incapacitate the attacker in some way and to some degree.

The stun gun, when held against the skin of an attacker from 2-5 seconds disrupts the nervous system and disorients the individual permitting you to get out of the situation and run like the wind. Stun guns come in a variety of styles and strengths. The higher the voltage the less time it has to be applied to the skin for the full effects to be felt by the attacker. The power on most stun guns available ranges from 200,000 volts up to 1 million volts. Stun guns come in all shapes and sizes. Some look like a cell phone, a baton, a flashlight, a small hand held rectangle, and some very intimidating looking heavy-duty items with big prongs sticking out of the end!

The Taser is much different then a stun gun. The way it works is the same but how it is used is different. With a Taser you can stop an attacker before he even gets close enough to grab you. The range of a Taser that the public can purchase is about 15’ to 20’. Two small barbs are shot out of a compressed air cartridge and when they make contact with an attacker, even through their clothing, they deliver a jarring bolt of voltage that incapacitates the attacker almost instantly. The recommended way to use the Taser is to fire at the attacker and then run to safety. The C2 model Tasers for the public are now being manufactured in a variety of colors and the shape of one is such that it is non-threatening looking and can easily fit inside a purse or pocket.

Pepper spray has been around for quite some time and can be very effective in disabling an attacker. The main ingredient is usually Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), a derivative of hot cayenne peppers. That’s right, hot pepper! Hence the common name “pepper spray” The pepper spray usually comes in a small canister that can be fit onto your key ring or a larger size that can be carried in your pocket or in an inconspicuous holster. They all have safety latches to prevent accidental discharges. You simply aim the pepper spray at your attacker’s face and spray a stream of the pepper spray.

Having personally experienced the effects of pepper spray I can tell you that the effects are not pleasant. When the OC contacts the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, throat, and lungs), symptoms appear instantly. The capillaries of the eyes immediately dilate, causing temporary blindness. Inflammation of the breathing tube tissues will cause difficulty in breathing; however the attacker will still be able to breathe. It is very unpleasant. Spraying this in the face of an attacker will give you the opportunity to escape from the dangerous situation.

We have talked about stun guns, Tasers and pepper spray and each one of these weapons is non-lethal. They will temporarily disable or incapacitate an attacker. Be prepared.

Consider getting one of these and hope that you never have to use it. It could be your greatest protection. That is no hype.

How many times have we heard those words, “Be careful or you’ll hurt yourself”? Every mother knows that children are going to fall down and scrape their knees, elbows or hands, it’s a given. It is all part of growing up!

“Little Johnny”, as we affectionately call him, is a very active child who loves to run, jump, bike, play “Superman”, and of course, fall down and get injured.

How many times have you been in the park watching your “Little Johnny” ride his bike or play on the playground equipment only to see him falling and knowing what the result will be when he lands? The next thing you hear is usually “MOMMY!” being screamed so loud that dogs start to howl!

Being prepared for this situation, or anything else like this, is a necessity with children, and adults alike. Sometimes “Big Johnny” gets a “boo boo” too. If your “Big Johnny” fancies himself a mechanic, carpenter, handyman, etc. I can guarantee you this – he will hurt himself. It is not a question of “If” but “When”.

Also, some of us are not as nimble on our feet as we once were, I’m not mentioning names here, but sometimes our feet and mind are not connected and we stumble and fall. and could not understand how someone could take offense because someone used canine pepper spray to ward off a dog attack!?!?

A man sprayed a loose dog with pepper spray last week, the second person in Park City this year to fend off an unleashed dog with the irritant.

The case is reminiscent of two well-publicized encounters between loose dogs and Bob Berube, a Park City man who sprayed two dogs on separate occasions and afterward became a polarizing figure.

In the most recent case, a jogger told the Park City Police Department he was confronted on a Prospector street by a loose Doberman pinscher. He sprayed the dog with pepper spray and the dog retreated, according to the Police Department. The incident occurred at about 6 p.m. on Sept. 16 at the Comstock Drive-Little Bessie Avenue intersection, Rick Ryan, a Police Department captain, said.

Ryan said police dispatchers received a call from the man with the pepper spray, 45-year-old Prospector resident Mark Kozak, saying the Doberman charged at him as he was jogging in the street.

"What you're seeing is citizens are frustrated that people are not being more respectful with their pets and keeping them on a leash," Ryan said, adding that other people in Park City are fed up like Berube is. "I don't think it's just one individual who's tired of loose dogs."

Kozak told a Summit County Animal Control officer he wanted the person with the dog, a 24-year-old man with a Tampa, Fla., address, warned, but not ticketed, for having a loose dog, according to Animal Control.

Kozak said the 24-year-old threatened him after the encounter, prompting him to call the police. The owner told Kozak "he'd have (the Doberman) rip my leg off," Kozak said. My comment is "And that is not justification for using the canine pepper spray"!?

According to Kozak's account, the dog harassed him for between 20 and 30 seconds, left momentarily and then returned to harass him again. Kozak said he then used the pepper spray.

"The second time, he felt more compelled to spray the dog," Ryan said.

Kozak said he has been a jogger for 29 years. He moved to Park City in the late 1990s and has carried pepper spray to protect himself from dogs while jogging for eight years. He said he rarely jogs on Park City streets because loose dogs pose a danger. Kozak said dog owners are often overly confident that their pets will behave.

The Berube incidents earlier in the year sparked outrage among many Parkites. They were dismayed that he sprayed the two dogs. Berube has said, though, he did not want the dogs approaching him. He won scattered support as well. The Berube cases occurred along the paved trail on the edge of City Park.

Leash laws have long stirred passions in Park City, with some dog owners preferring to leave their dogs off leashes. That fits with Park City's mountain-town vibe, they say. But others are frustrated with loose dogs, claiming that they make unwanted advances, among other ill received behaviors.

Leash laws are in effect throughout Park City and surrounding Summit County, but loose dogs are frequently seen in neighborhoods like Old Town and dog owners often let their pets off leashes when they are hiking on mountain trails. Some dog owners occasionally congregate in the field outside the Park City Library and Education Center, where they let their dogs off a leash as well.

Park City, meanwhile, recently opened a dog park at Quinn's Junction, the first such facility in the city limits. There has been scattered use since it opened.

Some Philadelphia Police Officers to Get Tasers

The Philadelphia Police Department is adding to its arsenal of crime-fighting techniques.

For the first time in the department's history a select group of officers will carry tasers on duty as part of a new public-safety initiative, the Philadelphia Crisis Intervention Team.

"This is truly a historic moment for the Philadelphia Police Department," Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said in a statement.

He said the tasers would give police officers on the streets an additional tool to prevent and reduce violence.

Ramsey added that the tasers would help improve police relations with the community.

CIT focuses on reducing violent encounters between responding officers and community members through training, education and the coordination of services.

One hundred sixty officers on the team will carry the tasers to provide an alternative and less-than-lethal use of force during potentially violent encounters.

According to Division of Public Safety spokeswoman Stef Cella, campus police will not use tasers at this time.

Penn Police officers carry pepper spray, in addition to police semi-automatic pistols.

83-Year Old Tallahassee Woman Stops Teen From Robbing a Car

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say an 83-year-old woman managed to scare off a 17-year-old boy who was trying to break into a car.

Tallahassee police report the teen was trying to break into the car in a convenience store parking lot Wednesday evening when the woman saw him and threatened him with her pepper spray.

The boy ran off, but police say the caught him later across the street. He was charged with auto burglary.

Taser Death Ruled Accidental

The death of a man who was shot with a Taser by Louisville Metro Police has been ruled accidental by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

The final report on the death of Isaac Bass, who died July 2, shows that he died of cocaine toxicity with a contributing factor of heart disease, said Sam Weakley, a deputy coroner.

Bass, 34, died a short time after he had been stunned with a Taser by a metro police officer. Tasers are intended to deliver an incapacitating, but not lethal, electrical shock.

Weakley said tests conducted after the initial autopsy came back to his office today showing that Bass had cocaine in his system and that was compounded by existing heart disease.

Officers responded to a home on Delaware Drive after calls that Bass was fighting with his brother, police have said. Police said that Bass became combative with police, striking one officer with a flashlight and reaching for an officer’s weapon during a struggle.

Officers Keith Heselschwerdt and Larry Wagner were put on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation into the incident.
